Oregon Coast
From Bandon to Newport
The central Oregon coastline is, arguably, the most scenic seashore in the lower 48 states. It offers an incredible photogenic range of natural assets—from intimate macro details of strandline and tide pool to dramatic, wide-angle views of rugged shores and graphic landscapes of water against rock to capture with a telephoto lens.
From sunrise to sunset our group explores a spectacular environment where waves crash upon jagged sea stacks and surge through soaring archways—providing ample photo opportunities for artistic compositions of water and light in motion. We photograph the classic lighthouse at Yaquina
Head against a vast blue ocean backdrop. Heceta Head Lighthouse—built in 1894, and perched on a rocky promontory 200 feet above the water—is among the most picturesque in the world. Though always a photographic show-stopper, at dusk we capture its true purpose when its revolving first-order Fresnel lens projects a beam of light 20 miles out over the Pacific as a fixed aid to navigation.
Our itinerary includes photographic exploration of the bustling fishing harbor of Newport with colorful vignettes of commercial boats, nets and tackle, and features the sweeping vistas and rippled sand patterns of Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area—the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. At Cape Perpetua we photograph seaside high-cliff panoramas and towering old-growth Sitka spruce forest festooned in lichens and mosses. And at Bandon Beach waves wash across expansive hard-packed sand and photogenic beach rocks, and flow between some of the coast’s most impressive sea stacks. Here light, water and mist come together in unique combinations—especially at sunset. Low tide at Bandon reveals a fascinating world of colorful sea stars, sea urchins, anemones and algae clinging to the exposed rock.
With over 40 designated natural areas in just 150 miles, the central Oregon Coast provides a wealth of photogenic subjects—and a comprehensive workout for all focal lengths. In late spring, longer days and a wide range of weather conditions offer photographers abundant opportunities to capture compelling natural images with a surprising diversity.

Itinerary
Day 1 (May 23)
Participants arrive in Portland, Oregon, and transfer to our airport hotel. We meet for dinner this evening. (D)
Day 2
The environs of Newport is our first photo target with its image-rich fishing harbor and photogenic Yaquina Head Lighthouse on Cape Foulweather. The tower stands 93 feet tall (28 m) and is the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. The light has been the setting for a variety of movies and television productions. (BLD)
Day 3
Following a morning shoot at Newport, we travel to Florence. Depending on light and weather, our afternoon shoot will include either Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and/or Cape Perpetua. Here, foggy conditions lead to moody and ethereal images, and evening light following unsettled weather can produce dramatic coastal sunsets. (BLD)
Days 4–5
The morning yields more images in the Florence area. Including our previous evening shoot, we hit all the area’s renowned photography hot spots. We have plenty of time to create sensational panoramic images, capture sensuous designs of sand patterns at the dunes, and work the photo potential of the Heceta Head light.
The evening of Day 4 finds us in Bandon with sea stacks as our sunset objective. Early morning of Day 5 provides numerous tide pools along the coast as the moon is full and a morning minus tide reveals the wealth of photogenic sea life temporarily stranded in the shallow water. The afternoon concentrates on seascapes and, hopefully, a colorful sunset. (BLD)
Day 6
We make our last sunrise images in Bandon before heading up the coast. Depending on weather we will concentrate our photography on seaside subjects or visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium and its photogenic seabird display. (BLD)
Day 7 (May 29)
Participants depart from Portland in the afternoon. (B)
