The rich history of southern Spain and its architectural legacy would make the incomparable Andalusia region a fabulous photographic destination all by itself. But when you tally up the rugged scenery of the Cadiz Mountains, the delightful Costa del Sol on the Mediterranean, numerous picturesque whitewashed villages hanging precipitously above isolated valleys, delicious Andalusian cuisine and friendly people of the lower Iberian Peninsula, the sum is significantly greater than its parts.

Andalusia is often regarded as quintessential Spain—the birthplace of flamenco, bullfighting and the Spanish guitar. This area contains 60% of all the protected environments in Spain—including some of the country’s most famous national parks: Doñana and Sierra Nevada—plus mainland Spain’s highest summits, the rainiest region and Europe’s driest deserts. Like punctuation marks between these natural treasures lie the picturesque white villages. Surrounded by pastoral farmland and crowned by thirteenth century Moorish outposts, these ancient hamlets grace the landscape with a timeless beauty.

Granada is the highlight of any visit to Spain and features prominently in our shooting schedule. Albayzin, Granada’s fascinating old Arabic quarter, the Sacromonte caves where the mixture of Moorish and Gypsy influences combined to create flamenco, and the formidable Alhambra Palace juxtaposed against the backdrop of the snowcapped Sierra Nevada summits, are the stuff of fairy tales.

In many Spanish towns, the medieval architecture is beautifully illuminated at night. And a night visit to the Alhambra is a magical photographic experience that no photographer should miss! Twilight and night photography will be an important part of this trip. Special instruction will be given to obtain the proper exposure for these difficult to read situations.

An hour’s drive from Granada, the Costa del Sol shoreline still harbors quaint and off-the-beaten-track fishing villages, the remainder of the paradise that was replaced with an endless succession of tourist resorts in the 1950s. We’ll seek out and photograph these ageless old-world backwaters and create images that conjure up the nostalgic ambiance of yesteryear.

Escape winter’s doldrums with this special opportunity to photograph the richness that is sunny southern Spain. With plenty of time to capture each location in the best light, you will create a diversity of imagery that will be both stimulating and fulfilling. Join us on the southernmost tip of the Old Continent. With expert leadership, wonderful accommodations, and a small group of enthusiastic people with a compelling common denominator, this trip will offer many highlights to tempt your shutter finger!
