California’s desert, more than 39,000 square miles in size, is so large it covers a quarter of America’s third largest state. A convergence of the Great Basin, Mojave and Colorado (Sonoran) deserts, these arid lands excite the senses with their starkly rugged, unpopulated and untamed nature. Our “digital desert” field workshop will provide field instruction that emphasizes shooting techniques to digitally capture the region’s many diverse features including washes, wildflowers, palm groves, cacti and sweeping vistas.

The recently designated Joshua Tree National Park, with its bizarre lily-trees and sensuous rock formations, forms the northern edge of the Coachella Valley. The dramatic rise in elevation that occurs within Joshua Tree accounts for the varied habitats from both the Mojave and Colorado desert ecosystems whose borders meet within the park. Below 3,000 feet, the Colorado Desert encompasses the eastern part of the park and features natural gardens of creosote bush, ocotillo and cholla cactus. The higher, moister and slightly cooler Mojave Desert is the required habitat of the Joshua trees. In addition to Joshua tree forests, the western part of the park also includes some of the most interesting geologic displays found in California’s deserts. Five fan palm oases dot the park and support a multitude of wildlife.

Along with incredible rock landscapes and a wealth of photogenic rock climbers, the most interesting photography comes at sunset when the silhouetted, stark and irregular outlines of the Joshua trees make them seem almost menacing.

To the south of Joshua Tree is the 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, renowned for its austere desert landscapes and spring wildflower bloom. Here, countless westerns have been filmed, using the park for location shooting.

In springtime, with adequate winter rains, the rocky hills can be covered with soft green spring vegetation; streams are still running in the canyons and the desert floor may be carpeted with vibrant wildflowers. In a good year, thousands of wildflowers burst into bloom, transforming the desert into a brilliant palette of pinks, lavenders, reds, oranges and yellows.

This digital field workshop will introduce you to the many facets of digital imaging and present a great chance to learn more about photography's newest tool. In the field you’ll receive hands-on instruction that emphasizes shooting techniques specific to digital capture to enhance your skills and fine-tune your technique to get professional results with your digital camera.

Day 1
Participants should arrange to arrive at Palm Springs, California, by late afternoon. We offer round-trip transportation to our hotel in Twentynine Palms. We will meet again in the lobby at 6:30 PM for dinner. (D)

Days 2–3
Sweet morning and evening light on the desert landscape is ephemeral, glorious and awe inspiring. We have two full days in Joshua Tree National Park to capture the light and landscape of this unique area. In late March, we should find many species of wildflowers, along with yucca, cacti and the stately Joshua trees to photograph in spring bloom. We’ll also plan to be at the park for sunset to improve upon the classic silhouetted shot of the “trees” against a carmine sky. (BLD)

Day 4
After another morning shoot in Joshua Tree, we drive to Borrego Springs to our conveniently-located hotel near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. (BLD)

Days 5–6
Our photography sessions for these two days will take us deep into the Anza-Borrego desert, featuring palm oases, badlands vistas, desert washes, unique rock formations and sand dunes. Our trip is timed to coincide with the region’s variable wildflower and cactus bloom. The park is at its best at sunrise, so we’ll be rising early. (BLD)

Day 7
We drive to Palm Springs this morning. Please schedule departing flights for no earlier than noon. (B)
