Recently retired after 35 years in business, Rod and Betty Vallee are now able to pursue their dream of studying and photographing nature throughout the world. Their travels with Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris have taken them to Kenya, the Russian Far East, Brazil's Pantanal, the Canadian Arctic, and Antarctica. They are now looking forward to their 2002 trip to Svalbard and Finnmark.
Rod and Betty live in northwestern Vermont where they roam their 430 acres photographing and studying the flora and fauna of the region. Natural history is an important part of their daily lives. Their property includes an 1843 stone schoolhouse, which they restored in 1996, and several miles of trails providing an ideal natural setting for educational programs on the history and conservation of the area.
The Nature Conservancy of Vermont, for which Rod serves as a trustee, recently requested that Rod and Betty photograph significant species in the various preserves around the state. They've also just completed a series of images for a biodiversity publication that will be used for state and local planning. They enjoy writing articles for magazines and have been published in Nature Photographer and Vermont Life. Currently they are working on their own book featuring their area's plant and animal life. For Rod and Betty, photography has become an important tool for environmental education.
