Ed Franke

Ed Franke's interest in photography began at age 7 with a gift from his parents—a Brownie Box camera. Around that time, his next door neighbor—a photographer for the LA Times—had a darkroom and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of developing and printing with Ed.

By age 14, Ed had graduated to his first 35mm Kodak camera and spent two summers at a boys' camp in the Sierra Nevada photographing nature and wildlife and teaching darkroom skills to the young campers.

As an adult, almost all of his vacations have centered around photo ops, always with an emphasis on nature and wildlife. Photography and Ed's love of travel have taken him to over 50 countries as well as to Alaska's Denali and Katmai National Parks where he photographed bears, salmon and a multitude of wildlife. Since his retirement in 2002, he has visited New Zealand, Brazil's Amazon, Costa Rica, Panama, Hawaii and Mexico.

Ed frequently shoots alone but he also likes and appreciates group trips. His first tour with Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris was to Spitsbergen in 2000. He has found that traveling on Photo Safaris tours has, “made it possible to see and photograph remote areas of the world that would otherwise be inaccessible” on his own. His most recent trip was to the Antarctic and the Weddell Sea, plus 5 weeks in the Falkland Islands. We are pleased to share some of the many images he made during his Antarctic journey.

Ed is now looking forward to traveling with Photo Safaris to the Galápagos Islands in 2006.

After easing into digital for two years, Ed made a complete conversion in 2003 and now shoots with the Canon EOS 1D and EOS 1Ds MARK II.
