When she moved into her home in southeastern Minnesota, Denise Dupras’ longtime
interest in photography merged with a newfound love of nature. The nearby woods are
a haven for birdlife and, by removing the screens from her windows, she has turned her
house into the ultimate wildlife blind!
In 1997 Denise registered for her first Photo Safaris tour—the Brown Bears of
Katmai National Park—a move she says further stimulated her interest in nature
photography. According to Denise, “Photographing the bears at such close range
from the falls and the lower deck hooked me on nature photography.” One of her
photos from the Katmai trip was published in the Alaska magazine.
Photographing bears has became a passion for Denise and it led her to join
our inaugural trip to Svalbard to shoot polar bears and other wildlife. For her,
the highlight of the Svalbard trip was,”watching a polar bear feast on a seal
as we celebrated with traditional American food and Russian vodka. It made
for an unforgettable 4th of July from the deck of our boat.”
Denise had long dreamed of photographing the wildlife of Africa and
her dream came true when she traveled with us to Kenya and Tanzania
on our Kenya Millennium Photo Safari. She continues to travel throughout
the world to hot spots for nature photography.
Often asked what kind of camera she uses to get such great shots, Denise
is quick to point out that she has learned that great photos do not come
from great camera gear, but from great photographic “vision.” It is this
vision that she continues to develop, whether photographing in her backyard,
from the deck of an icebreaker, or in a helicopter hovering above the lava
flows in Hawaii.
While she continues to work as an internist, Denise’s spare time is
spent in search of images. Her work is on exhibit at a co-op art gallery
in her hometown of Rochester, Minnesota, and she recently began
teaching nature photography to adults and children.
