David Tipling’s passion for wildlife and photography developed at an early age. He first
became interested in birds and worked as a bird ringer (bird bander in the US) as a
teenager in Britain. Later, he merged his passion of birds with another pursuit—photography.
After graduating high school David went to work in banking , all the while dreaming of taking up
wildlife photography full time. Ten years later, David made the break and began building a
nature photography business.
Being a wildlife photographer in Britain in the early 1990s was difficult, at best! To earn enough
money, David started his own photo stock agency—Windrush Photos—to market his
own imagery as well as that of several other nature photographers. Shortly thereafter, the Tony
Stone stock agency (now part of Getty Images) recruited him, and from then on he was able to
increase his travels and collection of photos. David has traveled throughout the world and, for
a time, led bird watching tours to China, Greece and within the UK. David occasionally offers
workshops throughout the UK, as well as lecturing to bird and camera clubs. David has
authored and co-authored a number of books including Collins Top Birding Spots in
Britain and Ireland, a best-selling guide to bird watching sites. Other titles include
The National Parks and Other Wild Places of Britain & Ireland and, his most recent
work; Bird Photography. He is currently working on a beginners’ guide to bird photography
for bird watchers and a book on digital photography for wildlife photographers—both to be
published in 2006.
David has won several awards for his photography, including the 2001 European Nature
Photographer of the Year for his work on emperor penguins. His favorite places for photography
include the Shetland Islands in Scotland, Finland (to which he makes at least one annual visit)
and Antarctica. David will be joining Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris in 2006 for our Emperor
Penguins of Snow Hill Island, Antarctica voyage. He currently lives with his partner, Jayne,
and young son James in Newcastle. Outside of photography David plays a lot of golf and
has a zeal for eating curry!
