From Mike's childhood passion for wildlife and the outdoors, photography became a hobby and then a profession. He moved from enthusiastic amateur to part-time professional in the early 1990s and to full-time free-lancer in 2000. First published in the 1993 Outdoor & Travel Photography reader's contest, his work has since appeared in such publications as Outdoor Photographer, Northwest Travel, The SeattleTimes' Sunday travel section, and PhotoMedia. He also markets fine-art prints and greeting cards.

Mike and Cathy Ferrand Bullock

Unlike Mike, Cathy began photographing somewhat reluctantly. As a staff writer for a Northeastern agricultural magazine in the 1980s, she was expected to provide the images for her articles. Out of necessity, she began practicing what she'd learned during a college photography course. To her surprise, she enjoyed it. Her images and/or articles have appeared in a variety of national and regional publications, including Outdoor Photographer and PCPhoto.
Mike and Cathy began collaborating on text and image packages for travel and photography publications after they married in 1993. They recently moved from Seattle to the Logan, Utah, area, where Mike continues his photography and Cathy teaches journalism at Utah State University.
